I just want to remind everyone that older people are fragile, have slower reflexes and bones that are more likely to break in the event of a fall.
At my parents house I installed grab bars in the bathroom, handrails at the front and back steps and have tried to remove all loose floor throw rugs. All of this was prompted by a sweet neighbor lady who fell and broke her hip. I don’t think she will ever fully recover. If she does it will take a long time and could have been prevented.

I understand that it is unsafe to have throw rugs on the floor w/ seniors. Both of my parents are still n their own home at ages 89 and 92 which I think is great. However my mother insists on having throw rugs on the floor even though the house is carpeted. She thinks the rugs protect her carpet and brighten up the place. Both of them use a walker or cane most of the time and I am scared to death that those rugs will hurt them. I had an easier time getting dad to quit driving than getting mom to remove those rugs. Has anyone else had this issue? How did you resolve it? I am worried sick.

We worried about car issues with all four of our parents, because we were afraid we would have to be confrontational. But we found that in the end, the issues about driving took care of themselves. All of them drove less and less as their eyesight faded, but they all liked having a car available so that other family members or friends could drive them on errands. Having their own car “available” made them feel more independent and less like they were imposing on others.

My safety concerns for my in laws may not be unique. Both Mom and Dad are still living in their own home and doing fairly well given that they are well into their 80’s! However I sense their age may be making affecting their judgment. It seems almost every week someone comes to their door selling magazines (or something) to get through school or some other noble cause. My in laws are financially comfortable but they are getting magazines and other products and services they will never use. And this is just the ones my husband and I learn about. I’m sure they pay out money and never see anything for it.

I have contacted local authorities but they say it is difficult to do anything unless an actual crime has been perpetrated. Also last week some stranger came to their door and told them he “ran out of gas” and needed to get home. They gave him $20.

Without offending them how can we keep an eye on their pocketbook so they don’t get taken all the time? If anyone has a good answer we would sure like to here it.

To Susan in Seattle – I had that same problem with my mother. One thing I did after I learned about these salespeople coming to her door was put up a “No Solicitors” sign on her door. That helped cut down on a lot of salespeople bothering her.

If your inlaws are paying for magazines or anything else and then not recieving the merchandise, that is fraud and elder abuse. The authorities should be very interested in that.

  4. Your blog keeps getting better and better! Your older articles are not as good as newer ones you have a lot more creativity and originality now. Keep it up!
And according to this article, I totally agree with your opinion, but only this time! :)

I will second the idea that April had about senior driving and letting her folks keep their car but just so that someone else could drive it for them. We’ve done that for my mother-in-law even though we are some distance from her. She has her “own car” but never drives anymore. there are a few people including my brother-in-law who are authorized to drive her car when she needs to go someplace (and seniors do like to get out) and we make sure the insurance coverage is good.
