My in-laws, aged 89 and 87 are still living in there home for which we are grateful. As we live a distance from them it is not easy to get over to them and help out very often. We are considering hiring some part time helper for them but are wondering about any legal issues that might arise. We have talked to some Temp agencies who assure us that they workers are covered for accidents. Does anyone know if there are other things we should be thinking about?
thank you Janice
PS – I think this is a good website for information. Thank You Keys Please
When we were faced with getting some help for my mother-in-law around her house. A woman with good credentials from her church was recommended however we were told by Mom’s insurance agent that we should probably take out a workmans comp policy in the event that the helper person got injured at the house. If you hire through an agency these types of things are usually covered but I think it would be a good idea to check.
Just wanted to comment that your section of legal advice is a good general overview of what people need to think about when dealing with family members as they advance in age. People should at least study the basic’s of Living Trusts and Advanced Medical Directives so they will know what they will be confronted with. Keep up the good work.
